Korail unveils Next-Generation KTX-Cheongryong High-Speed Train

Daejeon, South Korea (Urban Transport News): In a remarkable advancement for South Korea's transportation infrastructure, Korail has launched the KTX-Cheongryong, the latest addition to the country's fleet of high-speed trains. This cutting-edge train boasts a maximum speed of 320km/h, representing a significant leap forward in speed and efficiency.

Entering service on May 1, the KTX-Cheongryong operates twice daily on the Gyeongbu and Honam high-speed lines throughout the week, with an increased frequency of four services per day on the Gyeongbu line during weekends. Its superior acceleration capabilities and higher maximum speed enable it to significantly reduce journey times, with limited-stop services between Seoul and Busan now taking just 2 hours and 17 minutes, and the Yongsan to Gwangju Songjeong route shortened to 1 hour and 36 minutes.

Currently, two KTX-Cheongryong trains are in operation, with plans to introduce an additional 17 trains by 2027. While these trains are presently running at speeds of up to 300km/h, they are expected to reach their full potential of 320km/h upon the completion of infrastructure enhancements, including the provision of four tracks between Pyeongtaek and Osong, slated for completion by 2028.

Manufactured by Hyundai Rotem, the KTX-Cheongryong showcases entirely domestic technology, featuring distributed traction equipment across six of its eight cars, a departure from the traditional power car configuration. Its remarkable acceleration, capable of reaching 300km/h in just 3 minutes and 32 seconds, sets a new standard for high-speed trains, particularly suited for Korea's network with relatively shorter distances between stations.

Moreover, the KTX-Cheongryong's construction from lightweight aluminum, as opposed to steel, not only reduces weight but also lowers the axle load from 17 tonnes to 15 tonnes, offering benefits for track maintenance and longevity.

Korail views the KTX-Cheongryong as a pivotal step towards establishing a presence in the global high-speed railway market, where distributed traction systems have become prevalent. With a length of 199.1 meters and a seating capacity of 515 passengers per train, the KTX-Cheongryong boasts 35% higher seating capacity than its predecessors, providing passengers with a more spacious and comfortable travel experience.

Passenger amenities onboard include 220V sockets, wireless chargers, USB ports, and adjustable boarding steps to accommodate both high and low platforms, ensuring convenience and accessibility for all travelers.

The introduction of the KTX-Cheongryong High-Speed Train heralds a new era of high-speed rail travel in South Korea, characterized by unparalleled speed, efficiency, and passenger comfort. As Korail continues to innovate and expand its railway network, the KTX-Cheongryong stands as a testament to the country's commitment to advancing transportation technology and enhancing connectivity for its citizens and visitors alike.
