Bombardier to supply 44 more metro trainsets to Land Transport Authority

Singapore (Urban Transport News): The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a new contract to Bombardier Transportation for the supply of additional 44 metro trainsets for North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL) of the Singapore MRTS project.

"We are buying another 40 new trains for our North-South and East-West Lines from Bombardier Transportation. These new trains will arrive in batches from 2024 to replace the 2nd and 3rd generation trains currently in service on the NSEWL," said the statement issued by LTA.

Earlier, LTA had also purchased 66 new trains from Bombardier Transportation to replace the 1st generation trains that have served the North-South and East-West Lines since 1987.

"This latest batch of 40 trains uses the same design and this will enable our engineers to deepen their skills and technical know-how in one train type," added in the statement.

Features of the new trains will include an integrated suite of condition-monitoring features for timely fault detection, more open spaces for strollers and wheelchair users, Train-borne gap fillers for safer boarding and alighting, and refreshed LCD screens displaying train travel information.

Along with this contract, the operator of NSEWL, SMRT Trains, will sign a long-term service support contract with Bombardier Transportation to cover all 106 new trains. Bombardier will also provide technical and spares support for train repairs and system upgrades or replacements for the first ten years.
