Lucknow Metro: LMRC witnesses over 40% fall in daily ridership

Lucknow (Urban Transport News): The Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) witnessed over 40% fall in ridership since the launch of its entire corridor between CCS Airport and Munshi Pulia on March 8, 2019. Lucknow Metro's failure in providing last-mile connectivity is one of the main reasons behind commuters preferring cabs to the Metro. After launching of the 23.7 km corridor of Lucknow Metro on March 8, an average daily footfall of 70,000 was seen.

In April, the footfall dropped to 50,000 and in the past 12 days of May, only 40,000 passengers availing of the metro services every day. According to TOI reports, Hazratganj station has witnessed the worst plunge followed by Lekhraj and Indiranagar metro stations. However, all three areas have marketplaces and offices. This showed that the number of people using the Metro to go to work or for shopping had declined. The commuters saying that they had stopped using the Metro services because of the searing heat and non-availability of last-mile connectivity.

To catch the metro they have to walk from home to metro stations and vice versa. The people prefer using radio cabs instead of the metro when there is no reliable feeder service. According to the data shared by the LMRC, there has been no significant change in footfall at Lucknow University, Charbagh, Badshahnagar, and IT College stations. This indicated that railway passengers and students were still using Metro. “Two railway stations and a few educational institutes are situated next to the Metro stations.

People don’t have to walk much and hence, the footfall has not seen any drastic impact,” said an LMRC official. The corporation had announced feeder service for passengers involving auto-rickshaws from May, but nothing has happened till date. Sources said that the project has been delayed because the company granted contract is taking time to develop GPS-enabled software that will be installed in the autos. They have asked the company to expedite work and start the service as soon as possible.
