Maha Metro terminates Pune Metro contract awarded to HCC-Al Fara'a JV

Pune (Urban Transport News): Recently Pune Metro Rail project was in news due to construction workers are on strike for not being paid their salaries for a long time. Taking strong action against the erring contractors, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) has announced the termination of the contract. The Maha Metro has terminated the contract of both companies Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and Al Fara’a Group, who awarded the contract for constructing Metro stations at Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

While terminating the contract the reason stated by Maha Metro is “inconsistency” and “slow progress” of the work. Due to non-payment of salaries by the contractors, their employees had left their jobs over the last 10 months. Both companies were failed to execute the contract as per the deadline was given and which in turn had slowed down the execution of project work. A contract worth Rs.497.07 crores was awarded by the Maha Metro to the JV of Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and the UAE-based Al Fara’a group together in November 2017 for building nine metro stations at Pimpri-Chinchwad under the Pune Metro Rail project.

To ensure the timely completion of work, balance work of the contract was given to the Shapoorji Pallonji Group with an assurance to deliver the work on time. The contract was expected to complete by December 2019. Under the contract, the construction work on nine stations namely Tukaram Nagar, Bhosari, Kasarwadi, Phugewadi, Dapoli, Bopodi, Khadki, Range Hills and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) started 1.5 years ago. Hemant Sonawane, General Manager (Corporate Communication) of Maha Metro said that it has been a few days since the contract handed over by Maha Metro to the two companies stands terminated due to slow progress.

They failed to deliver the expected timeline and we were compelled to hand over the project to another company. For us to introduce the Metro at the soonest, it is essential that the companies to whom the project is awarded maintain consistency in their work. This was not the case with HCC-Al Fara’a. We had previously sent several notices asking them to speed up work. Due to the slow progress of work, the local residents are also facing a lot of traffic issues on ongoing construction activities. PCMC has instructed Maha Metro to speed up the work to ensure timely completion.
