CM Yogi suggests light rail transit system (LRTS) for Gorakhpur Metro

Gorakhpur, India (Urban Transport News): The efforts of the Yogi Aditya Nath -led Uttar Pradesh government regarding the Gorakhpur metro rail project have intensified. In this sequence, the Chief Minister saw the presentation of works related to the metro at Lok Bhavan in Lucknow on Friday evening. After watching the presentation, CM said that the light metro transit system (LRTS) in Gorakhpur will be more successful. He directed the Kumar Keshav, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) to build a metro station near Gorakhpur railway station so that the passengers can get down from the metro and go to the railway station.

Two corridors of Light Metro will be built

According to the presentation, two corridors of the light metro rail will be built in Gorakhpur city. All the stations will be elevated. Rs. 4,589 crore will be spent on the project. The first corridor will be 15.14 km long from Shyam Nagar to Sevai Bazar (Madan Mohan Engineering College) comprising a total of 14 stations. It has been estimated that approx. 1.55 lakh people will travel daily in the first corridor by 2024. This number will increase to 2.05 lakh in the year 2031, while in the next ten years i.e. by the year 2041, 2.73 lakh people will be able to travel daily.

The second corridor will be built between BRD Medical College to Nausad, which will be 12.70 km long and comprising a total of 12 stations. It is estimated that 1.24 lakh people will travel daily in the year 2024. This number will increase to 1.73 lakh in the year 2031, while in the next ten years i.e. by 2041, 2.19 lakh people will be able to travel daily.

Discussion on Varanasi, Meerut, Prayagraj and Agra Metro

CM Yogi Adityanath said that proposals based on a three-car metro should be prepared for Gorakhpur so that there will be no problem in the future in case the number of passengers increases. Along with this, he also directed to prepare a feasibility report, working on other options including the metro for traffic in Varanasi. He has directed officials to expedite work on other traffic options including the metro in Meerut, Agra and Prayagraj.
