Delhi Metro becomes the first in country to offer free Wi-Fi facility inside train

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) on Thursday launched a free high-speed Wi-Fi internet facility inside the metro trains running on Delhi Metro Airport Express Link. Dr. Mangu Singh, Managing Director of DMRC along with other senior officials has launched the facility at Shivaji Stadium Metro Station of Airport Express Line. After launching the facility, they took a journey from New Delhi and Dwarka Sector 21 and back. This is for the first time in India that the free Wi-Fi facility on moving Metro Trains has been launched. Delhi Metro currently provides a Wi-Fi facility at many of its major stations, including those on yellow and blue lines. "Passengers will be able to access high-speed free Wi-Fi by simply logging onto the network with the name “METROWIFI_FREE”. Just enter your phone number if asked, and get your OTP to enjoy high-speed internet access throughout your journey", DMRC twitted from its official twitter handle on 2nd January 2020.

The facility titled “Oui DMRC Free Wi-Fi” will be available on all six stations of the Airport Express Line viz. New Delhi, Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan, Aerocity, IGI Airport and Dwarka Sector 21. As of now, the airport line commuters will be able to log in simply by searching for Wi-Fi options and log into “Oui DMRC Free Wi-Fi”. DMRC aims to extend this facility to all the stations of the Delhi Metro Rail network gradually. For this facility, DMRC has tied up with a consortium led by Techno Sat Comm which presently runs India’s first Wi-Fi on train service on the Delhi-Howrah Rajdhani Express.

The facility will use the globally acclaimed "T-Track 2.0 Wave 2 Solution", also used on high-speed trains worldwide. With the facility, the metro commuters will be able to use all standard internet applications inside the station premises like e-mail, Facebook, Google, video chat as well as live streaming of cricket and football matches etc. The Delhi Metro, in association with Indian Railway-owned RailTel Corporation presently provides Wi-Fi facility at four of its major metro stations viz. Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Central Secretariat and Hauz Khas of the yellow line.


How to connect

1. Once you board a train on the Delhi Metro Airport Express line, turn on Wi-Fi on your phone. 2. You will find "METROWIFI_FREE" in available wi-fi list and then connect to the network. 3. A pop-up page will open which will ask your mobile number for OTP. 4. Sign in with your mobile number and OTP for free Wi-Fi.


The free high-speed Wi-Fi internet will be an additional facility for the commuters on the Airport Express Line. The 22.7 km long corridor comprising of six stations is continuously registering a steady increase in ridership with the total daily average ridership figure crossing 50,000 passengers in August earlier this year.
