Warangal, India (Urban Transport News): The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has recently completed a feasibility study report of the proposed Metro Neo Project in Warangal city. Now the authority is working on the preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) and is likely to submit the same within two months. The proposed Metro Neo Rail project for the tri-cities will connect Warangal to Kazipet via Hanamkonda in Telangana.

On 14th July 2020, the technical team members of the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) and the representatives of Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC) were met the officials of Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA), which is monitoring the project in Warangal and held deliberations over the technicalities involved in the project. E Ajit Reddy, Planning Officer at Kakatiya Urban Development Authority said that the Maha Metro would likely complete the preparation of the DPR in two months, Telangana Today reported.

After receiving the DPR from the Maha Metro, we will submit it to the State Government for further decisions on the project. The State Government in consultation with the Union Government will take a decision on it. It has to take a call on the financing modalities on the project too before going for the tenders. The tentative cost of the project is Rs 1340 crore.

The Government of Telangana has decided to take up the Metro Neo Project in Warangal. According to the plan, a 17 km-long elevated Metro Neo project connecting Kazipet railway station to Warangal railway station via Petrol Pump, Hanamkonda Chowrasta, Mulugu Road, MGM Center, Pochamma Maidan, Kashibugga, Venkatrama Junction will be constructed.

Warangal is the second biggest city in the State after Hyderabad is expanding day by day. Officials said that demolition of some buildings, shopping complexes, and structures, mainly from Petrol Pump to Mulugu road, will be carried out. However, they said that demolitions will be done as a part of the construction of the ‘Smart Road’ from Kazipet to Mulugu road in the city.

It is pertinent to mention here that Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) had been appointed as the principal consultancy by the State government to conduct the feasibility study and prepare the DPR of the Metro Neo project. The Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC) is appointed by Maha Metro as a technical consultant for the project and the authorities of the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) are monitoring the project on behalf of state government.
