IIT Jodhpur innovates NoMAS to revolutionize future of road transport in India

Jodhpur, India (Urban Transport News): In a groundbreaking development, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IIT Jodhpur) have unveiled cutting-edge technology set to transform the landscape of future road transportation. Known as the Novel MAC-Based Authentication Scheme (NoMAS), this innovation holds the promise of reshaping the future of road safety and traffic management.

NoMAS, developed by Debasis Das, Associate Professor, and Himani Sikarwar, Ph.D. A student from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at IIT Jodhpur introduces an advanced encryption system that not only enhances the security and intelligence of vehicles but also addresses multifaceted challenges prevalent on Indian roads. The technology's capacity to gauge a driver's stress level by analyzing driving patterns adds a unique dimension to road safety.

Key Features of NoMAS

1. Secure and Real-Time Communication:

NoMAS facilitates secure and real-time communication between vehicles, allowing them to exchange critical information about road conditions, accidents, and traffic jams. This can significantly enhance driver awareness and aid in avoiding collisions.

2. Improved Road Safety:

The system assists in improving road safety by enabling the exchange of data on road conditions among vehicles. This valuable information empowers drivers to make informed decisions, steering clear of potential road hazards.

3. Emergency Alert Dissemination:

NoMAS enables the rapid dissemination of emergency alerts in the event of accidents or hazardous road conditions. This feature ensures that nearby vehicles can take necessary precautions, while emergency services can be promptly alerted.

4. Data Analysis for Infrastructure Enhancement:

The data collected and shared through the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) network can be analyzed to identify accident-prone areas, patterns of risky behavior, or road conditions requiring improvement. Authorities can then take proactive measures to address these issues.

5. Theft Protection:

NoMAS incorporates robust security measures to protect vehicles from theft and unauthorized use. The MAC-based authentication scheme addresses key disclosure vulnerabilities and data leakage concerns in IoV networks.

6. Performance Enhancement:

The encryption employed by NoMAS not only ensures data confidentiality but also significantly enhances performance. It reduces workload by up to 99.60% and cuts communication needs by approximately 81% compared to existing methods, as verified through formal security proofs using different tools.

Implementation and Compatibility

NoMAS seamlessly integrates with different types of vehicles in India through an On-board Unit (OBU). Utilizing Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) and Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment (WAVE) protocols, vehicles can communicate effectively, creating a robust IoV network.

Recognition and Funding

This revolutionary research, funded by various entities including the Global Innovation & Technology Alliance (GITA), aligns with IIT Jodhpur's commitment to technological advancements. The paper detailing the NoMAS technology was published in IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Federated Learning-Based Driver Recommendation:

In tandem with NoMAS, IIT Jodhpur researchers have also developed a Federated learning-based driver recommendation system for the next-generation transportation system. Recognizing the dangers of driving-induced stress, this system utilizes vehicle telematics data to identify different driving types and stress levels. The DD-Monitor (Driver's driving monitor) testbed has been successfully run on the roads of Jodhpur City, showcasing its effectiveness in monitoring real-time driving data and identifying stressed driving behavior.

Collaborative Research

The research is a collaborative effort with the Jodhpur City Knowledge and Innovation Foundation (JCKIF), emphasizing the importance of these innovations in reducing accidents on Indian roads.
