Mumbai Metro lowered a complete unit of TBM in tunnel first time

Mumbai, India (Urban Transport News): The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRC) on 19th July 2020 announced that it has successfully lowered a fully assembled  Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM Tansa 1) at the south end of Science Museum station. The TBGM lowering work was carried out by a team of Doğuş-Soma JV and Freight Wings to commence 1.118 km underground tunneling towards Mahalaxmi station of 33.5 km long Corridor-3 (Aqua Line) of Mumbai Metro Rail project. The 480 MT heavy TBM Tansa 1 retrieved from Southend of Worli station has been moved to the Science Museum station. A 32 axel (128 wheeled) Self Propelled Modular Transporter deployed for the Herculean task. For the first time, an entire TBM transported without dismantling through Mumbai's lanes.

The work was carried out in the presence of MMRC Managing Director Ranjit Singh Deol and project Director Subodh Gupta who witnessed the lowering of TBM Tansa 1 at the Science Museum station. This Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) already achieved a breakthrough at Worli tunneling a dist of 2072 meters and is now being deployed here for its next drive towards Mahalaxmi station under package UG-3.
 
As on date, 2.072 km tunneling between the Science Museum and Worli in up direction and 2.057 km tunneling in down direction has been completed under package UG-3 of Mumbai Metro-3. TBM Tansa 1 had achieved the 28th tunnel breakthrough of Metro-3 at Worli station on 5th March 2020.
