Three bidders keen to supply coaches for Metro and Monorail in Mumbai

Mumbai, India (Urban Transport News): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has recently opened technicals bid of Rolling Stock contract to reveal the bidders who are keen to manufacture and supply Rolling Stock coaches for Metro Rail projects in Mumbai, India. MMRDA on July 4, 2020 revealed that three bidders have submitted their bids for supply of 234 standard gauge metro coaches for Line-4 & 4A (Wadala – Vikhroli – Kasaravadavali – Gaimukh) of Mumbai Metro Rail Project. Names of the bidder are as under:

  • BEML Limited
  • Bombardier Transportation
  • CRRC Corporation Limited

Tender for Design, Manufacture, Supply, Testing and Commissioning of 234 Nos. Standard Gauge Cars Including Training of Line 4 And Extension Corridor [Wadala – Kasarvadavali – Gaimukh] of Mumbai Metro Rail Project of MMRDA was invited on 20th December 2019 by MMRDA under the contract package MRS2. The estimated cost of tender is Rs 1,865 crore. In a tweet, MMRDA said that three Indian companies have shown interest in desiging and developing Monorail Rolling Stock. After giving first order for 'Make in India' metro coaches for Line-2 and 7, MMRDA hopefully will get develop Monorail coaches in India.

“We are in talks with Indian manufacturers like Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Titagarh Wagons Limited. The latter has also been positive on manufacturing the rolling stock which is quite a breakthrough.” said a senior MMRDA official, HT reported. Last year, MMRDA had floated a global tender to design, manufacture and supply 10 rakes and had received only two bids - one from CRRC (China Rail Road Corporation) and another from BYD (Build Your Dreams).

However, the tender was cancelled later in January this year, as bidders were seeking changes in the terms of contract in their favour. In February, the MMRDA reinvited the bids for design and supply of 10 rakes (four coach) for the 19.54 km Mumbai Monorail project and again received bids from CRRC and BYD. On June 16, 2020 the Authority has again terminated the contract and sought assistance from Indian manufacturers.
