Uttar Pradesh Inland Waterways Authority to expand Water Transport in the State

Lucknow, India (Urban Transport News): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chaired a high-level meeting in Lucknow on 27th August 2023 to discuss the formation of the proposed Uttar Pradesh Inland Waterways Authority (IWA). During the meeting, he emphasized the need to establish the authority promptly to enhance waterways transport in the state.

Adityanath suggested that the roles of chairman and vice-chairman of the IWA should be assigned to eminent experts, and the state's transport commissioner should be nominated as its CEO. The state IWA will serve as the nodal authority to collaborate with the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

The IWA will be responsible for regulating all activities related to inland water transport and tourism. It will also conduct hydrographic surveys and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental and safety laws pertaining to water transport, as well as promote the development and efficient use of waterways.

Furthermore, Adityanath emphasized the importance of studying and analyzing data related to inland water traffic. Scientific research will be conducted concerning inland water transport, tourism, shipping, and navigation. Technical training for stakeholders, as well as officers and employees in the inland water transport sector, will also be provided.

The IWA will play a crucial role in determining catchment areas, channelizing rivers, and maintaining navigability throughout the year. Additionally, it will be involved in planning tourist circuit routes and coordinating water transport with other modes of transportation. Encouraging public-private partnerships in water transport will also be part of the authority's responsibilities.

Recognizing the unique nature of each river, Adityanath stressed that the authority should establish standards for the classification of inland waterways.
