BEML and ICF collaborate to reveal Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Bengaluru, India (Urban Transport News):  Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), in partnership with the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), is gearing up to unveil a mock-up model of the sleeper version of the prestigious Vande Bharat train at its Bengaluru factory. This significant development is scheduled to take place by mid-October. Following the approval of the design after evaluating a full-sized coach, the production of the prototype will commence.

BEML secured a substantial tender worth Rs 675 crore and is tasked with delivering a total of 10 Vande Bharat sleeper trains. It is expected that the life-size model of the sleeper coach will be ready by October 20, 2023. According to an ICF official, the creation of the mock-up is a crucial precursor to the manufacturing of the prototype, which will feature 11 AC III-tier coaches and four AC II-tier coaches. The official rollout of the train's prototype is planned for this fiscal year.

The AC II tier coaches are designed with a focus on superior aesthetics, boasting smooth panels, embedded roof lights, a more accessible six-step ladder for upper berths, and spacious windows. The design prioritizes a world-class appearance while placing significant emphasis on passenger safety through the elimination of sharp edges.

To adapt the existing coach's interior for the sleeper design, quick modifications are required since the shell and other components will remain unchanged. BEML has collaborated with a company to develop the interior design for sleeper coaches based on ICF's specifications, streamlining the creation of the real-life model.

The Indian Railways intends to expedite production once the prototype gains approval, with the aim of introducing Vande Bharat trains on long-distance routes. The Railway Ministry has entrusted the manufacturing of sleeper versions of the Vande Bharat to two companies: BEML and BHEL-Titagarh Wagons JV.

BEML, leveraging its extensive expertise in railway coach and metro rail rake manufacturing, will produce Vande Bharat rakes at its Bengaluru facility. Concurrently, BHEL-Titagarh will initiate the manufacturing process at their West Bengal factory before transitioning the work to ICF in Chennai. This joint venture aims to produce a total of 80 rakes, with production set to commence at ICF following the necessary approvals.

ICF has allocated space and machinery, providing essential facilities to support the work of coaches in Chennai. The factory will offer a shed, manpower, and various amenities, including an automatic wheel line machine, paint booth, and cranes, all contributing to the efficient assembly and testing of the coaches.

In conclusion, the collaboration between BEML and ICF marks a significant step towards the realization of the Vande Bharat sleeper train, representing a significant advancement in India's railway infrastructure and passenger experience.
