BEML and BHEL-led JV awarded two contracts for 90 sleeper version of Vande Bharat Trains

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) of Indian Railways has recently issued two orders for design, manufacture and commissioning of 90 Vande Bharat (Sleeper version) trainsets.

A order worth Rs 675 crore issued to BEML Ltd for supply of 10 Vande Bharat (Sleeper) Trainsets while another order worth Rs 9,600 crore was issued to BHEL-Titagarh Wagons JV for supply of 80 Vande Bharat (Sleeper version) trainsets to Indian Railways.

"BEML Limited has received letter of acceptance for design, manufacture and commissioning of 10 Trainsets (Sleeper) on Vande Bharath platform, from Integral Coach Factory, Chennai. The total value of order is Rs 675 Crores exclusive of taxes," said BEML in BSE filing on 15th May 2023.

Earlier, a consortium of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Titagarh Wagons Ltd has bagged the order for supply of 80 sleeper class Vande Bharat Trains. This is one of the biggest Railway tenders for manufacturing-cum-maintenance of Vande Bharat Trains. The consortium will also undertake comprehensive maintenance of the trains for 35 years.

Order has been given to supply 80 trains at the rate of Rs 120 crore per train, excluding taxes and duties. And the BHEL led consortium will supply the trains over 72 months.In a statement, BHEL said that its consortium emerged as the L2 bidder against stiff competition, and has been awarded a contract for 80 Vande Bharat Trains, valued at more than Rs.23,000 crore (excluding taxes and duties). The order value comprises supply of trainsets for Rs.9,600 crore and balance for maintenance of the same for a period of 35 years.

"The consortium shall manufacture, test, commission and supply 80 energy efficient Vande Bharat Trains at their manufacturing facilities and at Indian Railways’ ICF-Chennai facility. The trains shall have design/operating speed of 176/160kmph (semi-high speed)," BHEL said in its statement on 12th April 2023.

BHEL will supply propulsion system, i.e., IGBT-based traction converter-inverter, auxiliary converter, train control management system, motors, transformers, and mechanical bogies. The products shall be manufactured at BHEL’s manufacturing facilities at Bengaluru, Bhopal and Jhansi.

BHEL’s consortium partner Titagarh Wagons shall be responsible for the mechanical coach building. The final integration, testing, commissioning and maintenance of the trains shall be jointly done by BHEL and Titagarh Wagons.
