Noida, India (Urban Trasport News): In a landmark development for India’s aviation and infrastructure sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Noida International Airport at Jewar, marking the operational launch of one of the country’s most ambitious greenfield airport projects. The inauguration signals a major step forward in strengthening multi-modal connectivity and economic growth in Western Uttar Pradesh.
Describing the moment as a milestone under the “Viksit UP, Viksit Bharat” vision, the Prime Minister highlighted that Uttar Pradesh now ranks among the states with the highest number of international airports in India. He emphasized that the airport will serve as a key gateway for regions including Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Bulandshahr, Etawah, and Faridabad, unlocking new opportunities for trade, tourism, and employment.
Developed at an investment of approximately ₹11,200 crore in Phase 1, the airport is designed to handle 12 million passengers annually in its initial stage. It features a 3,900-metre runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft and is equipped for 24/7 all-weather operations.
Strategically located along the Yamuna Expressway, the airport is envisioned as a multi-modal transport hub, seamlessly integrated with road and rail networks. The project is expected to significantly enhance logistics efficiency and position the region as a key node in India’s growing aviation ecosystem.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said, “The inauguration of Noida International Airport is a transformative step in strengthening India’s multi-modal connectivity. Such large-scale infrastructure projects not only enhance regional accessibility but also catalyse economic growth, logistics efficiency, and global competitiveness.”
The Prime Minister underscored the airport’s role in transforming the region into a major logistics and investment hub, supported by its proximity to the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors. With Dadri emerging as a key convergence point, goods produced in the region can now be transported efficiently across India and to global markets via integrated rail and air connectivity.
He also highlighted that the airport will create new opportunities for farmers, MSMEs, and youth, particularly by boosting food processing, exports, and supply chain efficiency in Western Uttar Pradesh.
The inauguration comes amid India’s rapid expansion of aviation infrastructure, with the number of operational airports in the country now exceeding 160, including 17 in Uttar Pradesh alone. The government’s UDAN scheme has further democratized air travel, enabling millions of passengers to access affordable flying options.
The Prime Minister also announced the development of a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Jewar, aimed at reducing India’s dependence on overseas MRO services and creating high-skill employment opportunities in the aviation sector.
The airport is part of a broader infrastructure push in the region, which includes the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, Meerut Metro expansion, and upcoming semiconductor manufacturing projects in Noida. These developments are collectively reshaping the region into a high-growth economic and mobility hub.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized that modern infrastructure such as airports is not merely about connectivity but acts as a catalyst for development, investment, and job creation. He also acknowledged the contribution of farmers who provided land for the project, noting that improved connectivity will help agricultural produce reach global markets more efficiently.
With its strategic location, advanced infrastructure, and integration with national transport networks, the Noida International Airport at Jewar is set to become a key aviation gateway for North India, reinforcing India’s ambition to build world-class infrastructure and accelerate its journey toward a developed economy.
