Ahmedabad, India (Urban Transport News): Addressing the 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat 2024 Summit, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, shared exciting developments regarding the implementation of pod taxis in Gujarat's upcoming Gift City. Emphasizing the commitment to futuristic transportation solutions, the ministry is actively preparing a detailed project report (DPR) to facilitate the operation of pod taxis in the region.
Union Minister Gadkari revealed that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) has established a dedicated committee focused on developing and recommending standards and specifications for the country's Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system. The initiation of the DPR is a crucial step towards realizing this vision.
The PRT system, also known as pod cars or pod taxis, represents an innovative public transportation concept featuring small automated vehicles operating on a network of specially designed guideways. These driverless pods are designed for nonstop, point-to-point travel, accommodating four to six passengers at a time.
In the context of Gujarat's Gift City, significant progress has been made. The National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) has already invited proposals for the development of driverless pods, enhancing internal transportation within GIFT City. This integration is envisioned to complement the existing Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and Metro rail systems.
The broader vision includes the establishment of an Ahmedabad Metro branch line connecting GIFT City to Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar by 2024, further enhancing connectivity in the region.
Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) stands as a central business district under construction in the Gandhinagar district of Gujarat. Positioned as a greenfield smart city and international financial services center, GIFT City is promoted by the Government of Gujarat as a transformative project.
Spanning 886 acres, the greenfield city is designed to encompass diverse elements, including office spaces, residential apartments, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, hotels, retail outlets, and various recreational amenities.
As the preparations for pod taxis unfold, Gujarat's GIFT City emerges as a testament to the integration of cutting-edge technology and sustainable urban development.
