New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): The national capital is gearing up for one of India’s most transformative urban transport overhauls, with Delhi’s civic and transport authorities outlining plans for luxury metro coaches, next-generation underground tunnels, and a futuristic pod taxi system to dramatically enhance city mobility.
The vision, driven by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and supported by the Delhi government and central agencies, seeks to prepare the city for its growing population while reducing congestion, improving last-mile connectivity, and integrating sustainable mobility technologies.
Delhi Metro commuters may soon get to experience upgraded luxury metro coaches featuring:
Enhanced seating comfort
Softer interiors
Digital passenger information services
Larger luggage space
Improved ambient lighting and noise-control features
Officials said the new premium coaches are aimed at making long-distance intra-city travel more comfortable, especially on high-density corridors such as the Airport Express Line, Magenta Line and future high-capacity routes being planned under DMRC’s Phase IV and V expansions.
DMRC has already begun feasibility studies into rolling out these premium coaches as part of service diversification initiatives to attract higher ridership and offer more choice to commuters.
Delhi’s transport departments have also proposed a series of modern underground tunnels that will act as congestion-bypassing links across key bottlenecks. These include:
A new tunnel connecting Pragati Maidan with Ring Road
Multi-level tunnel designs under busy intersections to segregate intra-city, local, and freight traffic
Drainage-integrated tunnels to reduce flooding incidents during the monsoon
The focus is on engineering tunnels that can endure high volumes, reduce surface congestion, and cut travel time by half across several central districts.
One of the most futuristic proposals in the plan is the deployment of pod taxis—automated, driverless pods running on elevated guideways.
The concept, similar to Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) systems in Japan, South Korea, and the UAE, is expected to be piloted on:
Rohini–Rithala corridor
Narela sub-city transport network
Pod taxis promise:
Zero-emission electric mobility
Point-to-point travel
Minimal waiting time
A direct boost to last-mile connectivity
Officials believe Delhi’s pod taxi network could become a model for other Indian metros.
Delhi’s transport ecosystem is undergoing its most intense transformation since the launch of the Metro in 2002. Between the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), Metro Phase IV, new e-bus fleets, and now luxury metro coaches, tunnels, and pod taxis, the capital is positioning itself as a global mobility leader.
Urban mobility experts say that by 2030, Delhi could feature one of the most integrated, multi-modal transport networks in Asia, combining:
High-speed regional trains (Namo Bharat/RRTS)
A vast metro rail grid
Futuristic pod taxis
Tunnel-based rapid access routes
Zero-emission e-bus corridors
Intelligent traffic management systems
