Patna to launch Eco-Friendly Water Metro; Trial Run soon between Digha and Kangan Ghats

Patna, India (Urban Transport News): Patna is set to become one of the first cities in eastern India to launch its own eco-friendly water metro service, as part of a landmark initiative aimed at transforming urban mobility and boosting river-based tourism. The project was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Saturday between the Department of Tourism, Government of Bihar, and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in Bhavnagar, Gujarat.

With an estimated investment of ₹908 crore, the Patna Water Metro will feature state-of-the-art hybrid electric catamaran vessels, including the MV Nishadraj. These vessels are designed for zero carbon emissions, operating in both battery and hybrid modes, and can accommodate up to 100 passengers, including provisions for wheelchair users. Air-conditioned interiors and modern amenities promise a comfortable and accessible transit experience for all commuters.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Mansukh Mandaviya, with IWAI chairman Sunil Kumar Singh and Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation MD Nand Kishore formalising the agreement. Bihar Tourism Minister Raju Kumar Singh called the initiative a "major milestone that will provide Patna with a smart, safe and sustainable water transport system."

During the initial phase, the water metro will operate between Digha Ghat and Kangan Ghat, with intermediate stops at NIT Ghat and Gaighat. A trial run is expected shortly, with ten more locations identified for future expansion. This service aims to not only reduce urban congestion and pollution but also improve accessibility and shorten travel time across the city.

“This project signals a new era in urban mobility for Patna, combining green technology with smart infrastructure,” said Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group. “The water metro will not only provide an environmentally friendly alternative for daily commuting but will also open new doors for river-based tourism and economic activity in the region.”

Patna is among 18 Indian cities selected under a national programme to modernise urban waterways and integrate inland water transport into mainstream mobility planning. The use of electric-hybrid vessels aligns with India’s broader commitment to sustainable development and climate goals.

The upcoming trial between Digha and Kangan Ghats is expected to generate insights into operational logistics and public adoption, paving the way for a full-fledged rollout in the coming months. Once operational, the Patna Water Metro will redefine river transport in the region, offering an innovative solution to the challenges of urban congestion while enriching the city's tourism profile.
