Munich, Germany (Urban Transport News): Siemens Mobility achieves a significant milestone by delivering the first batch of 70 Mireo regional and long-distance trains to the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). This order, valued at over €800 million, stems from the 2023 framework agreement secured by Siemens Mobility in late summer 2023. The trains, slated for delivery starting in late 2027, represent a progression of the well-established Mireo electric multiple-units known for their success in Europe.

The Mireo trains, designed for speeds up to 160 km/h, prioritize passenger comfort with features such as air conditioning, WiFi service, barrier-free access, electrical plugs, ski and snowboard racks, and dedicated spaces for buggies, wheelchairs, and bicycles. Notably, these trains boast wider cars compared to previous models, enhancing the overall passenger experience. Siemens Mobility introduces inner bearing bogies as part of a single-car concept for the new trains.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, expressed pride in the partnership with ÖBB, stating, "The new Mireo trains will help make ÖBB’s local and regional transport even more attractive." ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä highlighted the emphasis on passenger comfort, barrier-free boarding, bicycle transport, and Wi-Fi in the new trains. The order encompasses eleven 73-meter-long local trains, 28 106-meter-long trains for various federal regions, and 31 trainsets with a length of 106 meters for long-distance transport within the Alps.

Siemens Mobility's cutting-edge European Train Control System [ETCS] will control the trains, allowing for shorter intervals between trains on busy routes. The Mireo's lightweight construction, low energy consumption, and environmentally friendly features, such as air conditioning systems using a natural refrigerant and a heat pump, contribute to sustainability. The aluminum car bodies and innovative lightweight construction technology in the inner bearing bogies further enhance the trains' eco-friendliness.

The SF7500 bogies, developed at Siemens Mobility's competence center in Graz, are a key component, providing efficient traction and energy efficiency. The Mireo trains benefit from Austrian expertise, with the SF7500 bogies optimizing acceleration and creating a more spacious interior for passengers.

Manufacturing of the Mireo trains will take place within Siemens Mobility's global network of train manufacturing facilities, with state-of-the-art bogies produced at the competence center in Graz.

This delivery underscores Siemens Mobility's commitment to advancing rail transportation, offering innovation, sustainability, and enhanced passenger experiences for ÖBB's evolving fleet.

Siemens Mobility's successful delivery of the first 70 Mireo trains to ÖBB marks a significant advancement in rail transportation. With a focus on passenger comfort, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology, these trains represent a new era in regional and long-distance travel. The collaboration between Siemens Mobility and ÖBB continues to drive innovation, setting the stage for a more attractive and efficient future in rail transport.
