Mumbai, India (Urban Transport News): The Atal Setu, Mumbai’s newest and longest bridge, has reached a remarkable traffic milestone just seven months after its inauguration. Since officially opening to the public on January 13, 2024, this engineering marvel has facilitated the travel of over 50 lakh vehicles, underscoring its vital role in Mumbai’s transportation network.
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on January 12, 2024, and opened for traffic the following day, the Atal Setu has rapidly become a crucial artery for Mumbai’s transportation system. Stretching across the waters and holding the title of India’s longest bridge, it has revolutionized traffic flow and significantly alleviated congestion in the bustling metropolis.
From January 13, 2024, to August 25, 2024, a staggering 50,04,350 vehicles have utilized the Atal Setu. This impressive figure includes a variety of vehicles such as BEST buses, NMMT and MSRTC’s Shivneri buses, as well as numerous private and commercial vehicles. The bridge has successfully reduced travel times by at least an hour, making daily commutes between South Mumbai and key destinations like Panvel, Pune, and Navi Mumbai notably more efficient.
The Atal Setu's benefits extend beyond mere traffic management. It has significantly improved connectivity between South Mumbai and other major areas, including the forthcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. This enhanced linkage is expected to streamline transfers between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the new Navi Mumbai International Airport, benefiting both business travelers and the general public.
Looking ahead, the Atal Setu's utility is set to be further amplified by ongoing infrastructure projects. The Worli-Sewri elevated road, currently 75% complete, will soon offer a rapid 5 to 10-minute connection from Worli Sea Face to the bridge. Additionally, the development of an elevated road between the Chirle Interchange and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is expected to provide even faster commutes between South Mumbai, the western suburbs, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Pune, and the Mumbai-Goa Highway.
Maharashtra's Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde praised the Atal Setu’s impact on Mumbai's traffic dynamics. “The Atal Setu has revolutionized traffic in the Mumbai metropolitan area, benefiting millions of people. The fact that over 50 lakh vehicles have already used this bridge is a testament to its significance. This project is not only delivering economic benefits but also providing an effective solution to Mumbai's growing traffic challenges, positively impacting millions of citizens,” Shinde remarked.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, also highlighted the bridge’s significance. “The successful implementation of the Atal Setu has led to a marked improvement in Mumbai's traffic system. The fact that over 50 lakh vehicles have used the bridge since its opening underscores its importance. This project is a shining example of how technology, planning, and determination can drive profound social and economic change, serving as an inspiration for future initiatives,” Dr. Mukherjee stated.
The Atal Setu stands as a symbol of progress and commitment to improving infrastructure in Mumbai. Its ability to accommodate over 50 lakh vehicles in just seven months demonstrates its crucial role in enhancing connectivity and easing traffic congestion. As additional infrastructure projects come to fruition, the Atal Setu will continue to play a pivotal role in Mumbai’s transportation landscape, benefiting its citizens and contributing to the city’s economic growth.
