New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): In a significant boost to cooperative-led economic growth and inclusive urban mobility, the Government of India has extended institutional support to Bharat Taxi, a cooperative-owned digital mobility platform designed to deliver safe, transparent and affordable transportation while empowering driver-members through collective ownership and participation.
Launched under the national vision of “Sahakar se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation), Bharat Taxi is an initiative of Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, a Multi-State Cooperative Society registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002. The platform enjoys strong backing from leading cooperative institutions, including NCDC, IFFCO, NABARD, KRIBHCO, GCMMF (Amul), NAFED, NDDB, and the National Cooperative Export Limited, reflecting unprecedented institutional confidence in a cooperative digital mobility model.
Positioned as a community-owned alternative to conventional aggregator-based taxi services, Bharat Taxi places drivers at the heart of the platform. Driver-members are not just service providers but co-owners, ensuring fair remuneration, participatory governance and ethical service delivery, while commuters benefit from reliable and cost-effective transport.
The service has been pilot-launched in the Delhi–NCR and Saurashtra region of Gujarat, with a vision to emerge as a dependable last-mile and point-to-point mobility solution across urban and semi-urban India. The initiative aligns closely with the Government’s objectives of inclusive growth, fair competition, sustainable livelihoods, and digital empowerment in the urban transport sector.
To accelerate adoption, cooperation has been sought from Central and State Ministries, Departments, PSUs and autonomous bodies to extend appropriate promotional support for Bharat Taxi within official premises and communication channels, without affecting routine operations. Government offices have also been encouraged to sensitise officials and staff about Bharat Taxi and provide institutional feedback ahead of wider rollout.
The Bharat Taxi mobile app, available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store, enables seamless onboarding for commuters and driver-members alike.
Commenting on the development, Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO, Urban Infra Group, said: “Bharat Taxi represents a powerful shift in India’s urban mobility narrative. By combining cooperative ownership with digital platforms, it restores dignity and economic security to drivers while offering commuters a transparent and affordable alternative. Institutional support from the Government and leading cooperatives makes this model scalable and sustainable, and it could well become a benchmark for people-centric mobility solutions across India.”
With Bharat Taxi, the cooperative movement is entering the digital mobility era, reinforcing India’s commitment to community ownership, inclusive development, and technology-enabled public service delivery—where growth is shared and mobility truly serves the people.
