Coimbatore, India (Urban Transport News): The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has completed the preliminary report for the proposed Coimbatore Metro Rail project in Tamil Nadu. The report will be now handed over to the state government for review and approval so that the detailed project report of the project can be prepared.
The preliminary report has been formulated based on a feasibility study conducted by french consultancy firm Systra MVA.
"The report proposed five corridors, with a total distance of 136 km, along Avinashi Road, Mettupalayam Road, Thondamuthur Road, Sathy Road, and Tiruchy Road in Coimbatore. Additionally, one route would also be allocated for Vellalore, where the integrated bus terminal project is under progress," said an official who is part of the development team.
"The report was later submitted to the CMRL. The project need not only be for setting up a metro rail, but CMRL also has other options, such as implementing monorail, suspension rail, tram, or even an exclusive pathway for buses", he added.
The official further said that due to the pandemic, no developments took place in the last few months. The state government would give consent once the CMRL officials submit the preliminary report.
According to the engineering and consulting firm Systra MVA who had conducted the feasibility reports suggests, the first corridor would be 26 kilometers long made between Ukkadam and Kaniyur while the second corridor between Ukkadam and Bilichi and the third corridor between Thanneerpandal and Karanampettai would be 24 and 42 kilometers long and the fourth corridor will cover 44 kilometers between Karunya Nagar and Ganeshapuram. The fifth corridor will be 11 kilometers long and would connect Vellalore to Ukkadam.
