Ahmedabad (Urban Transport News): During his two-day Gujarat visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off the metro train services on the 6.5 km long stretch between Vastral and Apparel park of Ahmedabad Metro Rail project today. He traveled some distance on the Phase-1 stretch and unveiled the Common Mobility Card (Smart Card) of Ahmedabad Metro.
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is implementing the Rs.10,773 crores project of Ahmedabad Metro Phase-I. The total distance of Phase 1 project is around 40.03 km, out of which 6.5 km is underground and the rest of the stretch is elevated. The minimum fare is started from Rs 15 for a ride of up to 2 km and the maximum fare will be around Rs 51 for a ride of up to 31 km. The 6.5 km long stretch will connect Vastral Gam to Apparel Park, will also include other two stations- Nirant Crossroads and Rabari Colony.
Recently, GMRC has successfully completed the first trial runs on the 6.5 km route. This stretch is part of the East-West Corridor of Phase 1 of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project. The East-West Corridor will cover nearly 21.16 km long distance along with 17 metro stations. And the North-South Corridor, which is completely elevated will cover a total distance of 18.87 km along with another 15 metro stations.
The Old High Court station will work as an interchange station for both the corridors of Ahmedabad Metro. The East-West Corridor will connect Vastral Gaam to Thaltej Gaam, crossing through Nirant Cross Road, Kankaria East, Kalupur Railway Station, Vastral, Rabari Colony, Amraiwadi, Apparel Park, Ghee Kanta, Shahpur, Old High Court, Gujarat University, Gurukul Road, Stadium, Commerce Six Road, Doordarshan Kendra, Thaltej metro stations.
The North-South corridor will connect Motera Stadium to APMC, Vasna, passing through Sabarmati, Ranip, Vadaj, Vijaynagar, Usmanpura, Old High court, AEC, Sabarmati Railway station, Gandhigram, Paldi, Shreyas, Rajivnagar and Jivraj metro stations.

PM Modi has also laid the foundation stone of Phase-2 of the Ahmedabad Metro for which central cabinet had given their approval in February 2019. Total completion cost of phase 2 of Ahmedabad Metro which comprise two corridors of total length 28.254 km, is estimated at Rs 5,384.17 crores. The total distance of the first corridor is 22.84 km, which links Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and the second corridor will be 5.416 km long from GNLU to GIFT City.
Phase 2 of the Ahmedabad Metro rail project aims at streamlining the urban public transportation system and a much-needed additional urban transport infrastructure in twine cities namely Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. After commissioning, it will provide comfortable and reliable public transport to the travelers and help decreasing stress in inter-city commute due to intensive developments, increased number of private vehicles and heavy construction in the region.
