Chennai, India (Urban Transport News): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has recently issued its plan for the procurement of Machinery & Plants (Depot M&P), Rolling Stock coaches and other materials for Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project. In its plan, CMRL has set the deadline for procurement for the year 2023, 2024 and 2025. According to the plan shared by CMRL, they will procure a total of 414 metro coaches in the next four years in a phased manner. Out of 126 Rolling Stock coaches will be procured on a lease basis.
As per the detailed procurement report (DPR) of phase II, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will issue tenders for the procurement of Rolling Stock coaches as per the details given below by the year 2025.
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will also float tenders for procurement of the following machinery and plants (Depot M&P) for its three metro depots namely Pooamalle, Siruseri/Sholinganallur and Madavaram by the year 2023, 2024 and 2025 respectively.
In addition to the above, following Depot M&P will be procured for Wimco Nagar Metro depot by 2020:-
According to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), a total of the 52-km section of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project which includes Line-5 (Madhavaram to CMBT) and Line-3 (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur) termed as ‘priority corridors’. The priority corridors will be financed by Japanse financing body Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In December 2019, JICA had changed its financing strategy to fund the major infrastructure projects in India. According to the new financing strategy, only Indian firms can participate in the bidding process of the metro rail projects being financed by JICA. Hence, there is a possibility that only Japanese rolling stock manufacturers or joint-ventures with Japanese firms will be allowed to participate in the bidding process. The detailed specifications of the Rolling Stock coaches and Depot M&P will be given in tender notifications to be issued by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited.
