Govt of India approves Rs 14,788 crore Bangalore Metro Phase 2 Project

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): The Central Government cabinet on April 20, 2021, gave their nod to 58.19 km ambitious Phase 2 of the Bangalore Metro Rail project. This is a big step towards realizing the dream of metro connectivity to the City's International Airport. This project is divided into two sub-phases viz. Phase 2A (ORR Line) and Phase 2B (Airport Line) with an estimated cost of Rs 14,788.1 crores.

"The Govt has approved Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2A from Central Silk Board Junction to K.R. Puram and Phase 2B from K.R. Puram to Airport via Hebbal Junction of total length 58 km. The total completion cost of the project is ₹14,788 Crore," said Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways, Commerce, Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

The Karnataka Government has approved Phase 2 in two years ago but it was announced in the 2021-22 Union Budget by the Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Seetharaman. Phase 2 has been given a five years deadline to complete the project.

Phase 2A will connect Central Silk Board Junction to K. R. Puram via Outer Ring Road (19.75 km and 13 stations), Phase 2B will connect K.R. Puram to Kempegowda International Airport via Hebbal Junction (38.44 km and 17 stations). The two phases put together will connect key hubs such as Electronics City, Bellandur, Marathahalli, K.R. Puram, Nagavara, Yelahanka and KIA. It will come as a boon to office goers as it will connect the IT corridor of the city to the airport.

"The process of transforming the urban landscape continues. In a landmark decision today, Union Cabinet gives its approval to Phases 2A (19.75 km & 13 stations) & 2B (38.44 km & 17 stations) of Bengaluru's Namma Metro at a cost of ₹14,788 cr.," said Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs.

“Once completed in the estimated 54 months, this project will play a key role in decongesting the city which contributes 40% to India’s IT exports & is home to a large number of IT parks, hubs & industries; many of which are located on the route,” he added.

This connectivity would provide a sustainable & efficient mode of transport enabling the city to realise its economic potential & ease traffic congestion on the roads leading to the Airport. It will also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, he further said.

The land acquisition process for both Phase 2A and Phase 2B already started by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL). “Now that the Union Cabinet has approved the project, the work orders can be issued soon,” said a senior BMRCL official.

The Phase 2 corridors will be funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). For this, ADB had approved a loan of USD 500 million (approximate ₹3,860 crores) in December 2020 and JICA signed an agreement with the Government of India in March 2021 to provide an ODA loan of ₹3,717 crores for developing an estimated 80 km of metro line including Phase 2A and Phase 2B.
