Kochi (Urban Transport News): The Kerala Government has cleared the doubts of extension of the Kochi Metro Rail project in the city. The state cabinet has approved the revised detailed project report (DPR) for the Kochi Metro extension to Tripunithura Railway Station in the last week. However, the extension work will be executed by the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) instead of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Sharing information to the reporters, Tripunithura MLA M Swaraj said;
Now, all those doubts have been cleared. The Cabinet has approved the extension of Kochi metro from S N Junction to Railway station via bus depot. This is really a great moment for the residents of Tripunithura. The extension will cost Rs 356 crore and the work, once launched, will be completed in two years.
The detailed project report (DPR) for the extension of Kochi Metro services from S N Junction to Tripunithura Terminal was prepared by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) in 2017. In the detailed project report, the KMRL had proposed 1.2 km viaduct and one station at Tripunithura terminal. However, suggesting some changes in the DPR, the Tripunithura Municipal Corporation requested the KMRL to revise the metro extension route to Tripunithura through the proposed road and bus depot planned beside Tripunithura railway station.
The KMRL has revised the original DPR based on the suggestions received from the Tripunithura Municipality Authorities and submitted the revised DPR to the state government with an estimated cost of Rs 356 crore accordingly. Sources said that the KMRL will directly execute the remaining work of the Kochi Metro Rail Project as the contract between KMRL and DMRC will end as soon as the first phase of work until Petta is completed.
